What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a focused awareness that allows us to access our unconscious mind for creativity, solutions to problems, and to enforce patterns for change.

“Hypnosis is the oldest and most natural mode of healing known to man.  It is considered a potent and safe adjunct to medicine, an effective procedure in psychotherapy, dentistry and law enforcement.”

Alternate States of Consciousness/Hypnosis

We are naturally in “other than conscious” mind states much of the time, although we are usually not aware of it. ‘Daydreaming,’ ‘futurizing,’ ‘zoned out’, ‘blissed out,’ ‘sleeping,’ and all the automatic body functions, happen in what is referred to as the subconscious or unconscious mind.

Using the metaphor of an iceberg, the part above the water represents the conscious mind.  The part below  the surface represents the unconscious mind.

Myths & Misconceptions of Hypnosis

There are many myths about hypnosis, mostly perpetrated by the media.  I will attempt to clear those up using the M.Y.T.H.S  Model:

M. – “Must be like what you see on T.V.”
The common image of hypnotist in the media is usually very inaccurate.  They are commonly portrayed as someone who has evil motives and uses mind control to force others to do his or her bidding.  This image is completely false.  The hypnotist does not have the power to control another’s mind.  They are trained to help their client tap into the client’s own creative unconscious mind to produce positive change in the area the client wants to focus on.

Y.- “You can’t hypnotize me! My will is too strong.”
This is another common misconception.  We all go into natural forms of hypnosis/altered states of consciousness on a daily basis.  Examples include:

  • Being engrossed in a good book or movie.

  • “Zoning out” while driving long distances.

  • Right before you drift off to sleep at night or when you first awake in the morning.

  • Being captivated by a great public speaker.

  • Daydreaming.

Tests have shown that people with average and above levels of IQ make good subjects for hypnosis.  This is because it takes a certain amount of mental focus to achieve it.

T. – “Tell all my secrets”.
This is another false misconception about hypnosis.  You won’t do or say anything while under hypnosis that wouldn’t do or say in your normal state of consciousness.  You won’t do anything against your moral code.  All hypnosis is “Self-hypnosis”.  Using the metaphor of a bus, imagine the hypnotist is acting like a bus driver, you can choose to get on or off the bus at will.  The hypnotist just acts as your guide during the journey.

H. – “Have total amnesia”.
This is not true.  Although everyone’s experience with hypnosis is unique, you will hear and remember just about everything during a session.

S. – “Stay hypnotized”.
This is another myth.  Hypnosis has been practiced in one form or another for over 5,000 years and there has never been one documented case where someone has been “Stuck in hypnosis”.  It simply can’t happen!

Other Services

Hypno-Coaching

Hypno-Coaching combines Life Coaching with Hypnosis.  Life Coaching help clients set goals, get clarity, identify and overcome obstacles along the way, and helps client balance their life.  These actions are accomplished using the conscious mind.  Life coaching is a conscious mind process.  Adding Hypnosis to Life Coaching give you the added benefit of working with the subconscious part of your mind.  The subconscious mind has tremendous influence over our emotional states, habits, and patterns.  Working with subconscious allows you to overcome challenges more rapidly and efficiently.
Hypno-Coaching is a holistic approach to working with the “whole mind” both conscious and subconscious parts.

How do Hypno-Coaching sessions work?

I meet with you for an initial intake session.  At that time we would determine what your goals are and agree on an action plan and time period for the Hypno-Coaching contract.  The sessions would be a combination of over the phone, via email, and in person if desired.  I would use the life coaching structure and would incorporate hypnosis sessions into the program to help overcome challenges along the way.  I would also teach you self-hypnosis that you could use outside our sessions together

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Emotional Freedom Technique is a meridian based therapy used to balance the energy system using a simple sequence of tapping on key acupressure points on the face, upper torso and hands. Relief of emotional states such as fear and sadness, as well as physical pain is possible through balancing of the energy in the meridian system associated with the mental emotional imbalance.
